"I needed this and I did not care who said I was 'too old' (no way!)...or not strong enough

(oh yes I am!)...not physically able to keep up (you just watch me)..."

"This Boot Camp experience has been life changing in many ways. I have been hearing "Boot Camp" for a few years and it always interested me but I never did anything about it....A friend mentioned it right after Christmas....saying she had a friend...and it just lit a fire........I went to Longevity on a Saturday and the first darling person I met was Jamie...who graciously showed me around and encouraged me to sign up and said she was sure I could do it......

My husband has been 110% behind me all the way....he always stands behind me on anything I want to do..he has had my hot Epson Salts bath ready when I get home each night..and dinner on the table for my ravenous and aching body and encouragement when I thought I could not go on...always saying "I know you can do it"!!! He is the BEST...

Then came the resistance and the questions and the negativity...why do I need to do it, what do I need to prove, etc., etc., etc......the friends.. my kids...not so much encouragement!!!! I had a friend ask f I didn't know my limitations and when I read that I thought....NO, I do not accept that because I a 67 I have limitations...I can do ANYTHING I decide to do....I am healthy and determined and intelligent and I can do this. I have taken Pilates for years and am strong but have kind of let things slip in the last few years...My stamina has slipped listening to women my age who I hear saying..."I used to"...or "not at my age"...or "not any more". I always shy away from those words and thoughts. I wanted to really ramp it up...get back to my full potential and ability.......I was so excited and so scared and apprehensive....

I arrived the first Saturday...for Orientation and we jumped right in. Steve (the head Boot Camp Trainer) let us know immediately that we were there to work...no slouches. I truly thought there was no way I could do it!!! But I did get through it.....almost dead!!! but exhilarated!! I paid my money...had my before picture taken and I was IN!!! In retrospect, I was scared of Steve because he was so tough that first day...and now I know him as a teddy bear....the best trainer I have ever known!!!!

And then the whole thing started...Amazingly difficult and challenging....doing things I never would have believed I could do...crawling on my stomach and climbing walls........I cried all the way home each night of the first week! There have been things I needed to modify and the coaches have been fabulous about that.....the whole idea is not to compete with anyone...just do you very, very best and then I little bit more...push harder than you think you can.

I hurt my knee in the first week and thought I would have to stop but Steve took my in hand and worked with me, giving me direct instructions of what to do and in a week I was right back into the swing of things with my knee healed. Steve's caring commitment to every one of us is amazing!!!

And Steve's wife, Bonnie,...well, she is just the most amazing woman. Her encouraging messages at the end of the first week kept me in and kept me going. She blesses each of us with her guidance and knowledge and presence all the time, emailing us often with encouragement - and Bonnie's diet talks have opened up a whole new world to me. I have learned more in 5 weeks about food and diet than I have in a lifetime. I finally get it that "food is fuel". I will never again eat bread with dinner. I will look at a piece of cake as a grueling 1-hour Boot Camp. It all makes sense. Finally a health and exercise and diet regimen that makes sense and I understand.

Last night doing my very first 5K around the Longevity building 26 times...I felt like Rocky!!!!! It did not matter that I was last, what mattered was that I did it...and I jogged through at least half of it. I could not have done anything like that 5 weeks ago!!!!

It is a shock to my system....a great shock....I needed this and I did not care who said I was "too old" (no way!)...or not strong enough (oh yes I am!)...not physically able to keep up (you just watch me).......there is no one to keep up with.....I have just plain given it my all.

After 5 weeks I have lost 9.6 pounds.....and lost pounds of body fat and gained lean muscle mass. My jeans look great and I feel like a million dollars - and the very best part is the feeling of empowerment. I can do it!!! I did it!!! I loved every minute!!!

Bottom line...this is the hardest physical challenge I have ever done. It is the most beneficial for my body and health and overall self esteem. I can do anything I decide to do. I will never let anyone tell me I can't do something...I stand taller and have a lilt in my step that I know is earned!!!! For anyone, no matter what your age, who is interested....who feels a yearning when you hear "Boot Camp".......YOU CAN DO IT!!!!"

Experience Freedom in a Structured Program, by Bonnie Pfiester from YourHub TCPalm

One of Austria’s premiere female authors, Marie Von Ebner-Eschenbach, once said “As far as your self-control goes, as far goes your freedom.”  We live in a world where self-control is probably one of our biggest issues – especially when it comes to food and fitness. We may be free to eat and live however we want, but eventually we are in bondage to our overweight, out of shape bodies.

Ironically, in the land of the free, millions of people are more than willing to give up their freedom at the chance of losing weight and getting in shape. Everyone who has seen Biggest Loser or Fat March knows ahead of time what to expect, yet it doesn’t stop people from trying out for weight loss reality TV.

I saw this kind of willingness at our Boot Camp kick off event. Eighty women showed up for a day of intense boot camp style training.  Clearly, it was training like they’ve never experienced before. From teens to seniors, everyone gave it their all. Several women exercised with tears flowing down their cheeks, a display of determination I had never seen before.  These women wanted a change and they were ready to do whatever it took to get rid of their ball and chain once and for all.

Why is it people are so willing to go to such extreme measures? I believe everyone wants to lose weight. Everyone wants to be a success. Unfortunately, the same freedom we are given to succeed is also the same freedom that allows many of us to fail. This is why people look for opportunities to almost be “forced” to succeed.

We also need support structure. You may not need a program as extreme as boot camp, but you may need some kind of support system. It is too easy to get discouraged when you are alone. Hopelessness can set in and overshadow even the greatest success. However, when you have support, you have better chances of pulling through in the down times. It doesn’t matter how strong you are – we all have our down times.

I even need support. There are many times I wouldn’t run by myself if my mom didn’t run with me. There are numerous times I would get caught up in work and miss a workout if I didn’t have a workout partner I was accountable to. This is exactly why support groups, personal trainers and group programs are so effective.

Camaraderie is a powerful force. I’ve already seen it begin to grow in the beginning stages of our boot camp. People need each other more than we want to admit. Although you may have to give up a little of your freedom as you share your journey with others or follow someone’s lead, there is no better feeling than experiencing the freedom of healthy living.
